The boom operators task is to make it possible to record every single sound that matters on a film set in the best quality achievable. With the microphone attached to a boom pole he holds it as close to the talking actors as possible (making sure he casts no shadows or even moves the mic into the camera’s frame). To do this communication with other departments like camera operators and lighting is necessary. His work makes the boom operator the missing link between the sound mixer/recorder and the actual film set. The quality of the recorded original sound track is greatly influenced by him.
